Hyperactivation of the Wnt pathway initiates the formation of colonic adenomas preceeding colorectal carcinomas (CRCs), while estrogen receptor signaling has a protective role in CRC development. In my project I am characterizing the functions of a transcription factor possibly linking estrogen related ecdysone signaling and local Wnt signaling in ISC physiology and pathology in Drosophila to get insights into the mechanisms by which steroid hormones may modulate Wnt signaling in CRC.

Drosophila Hormone receptor 3 (DHR3) is a part of the ecdysone signalling pathway, but the receptors function is still unclear. In my project, I investigate the role of DHR3 in stem cell fate in the adult Drosophila midgut and the interaction with another hormone receptor, Eip75B. With this, we aim to get a deeper understanding about cell fate and its selection in the adult Drosophila midgut.

The ability of cells to migrate is essential for the formation and maintenance of epithelia. In my project I am focusing on the interaction of specific signaling molecules and their corresponding receptors in relation to cell migration and apoptosis. With these investigations we intend to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms of cellular mobility within the midgut epithelium of Drosophila melanogaster.

I am investigating the role of microRNAs in intestinal stem cell metabolism in Drosophila melanogaster. Special focus lies on regulation of fatty acid metabolism and possible effects on stem cell survival controlled by microRNAs. The goal of my project is to gain a better understanding of intestinal stem cell metabolism by manipulating microRNA expression levels in a spatially and temporally controlled manner utilizing the ReDDM-System.
